Bob Sinicrope: A Lifetime of Jazz Education and Bass Mastery

Few educators have left a deeper imprint on the world of jazz education than Bob Sinicrope. Best known as the founding director of the renowned Milton Academy Jazz Program, which he launched in 1974, his ensembles have performed at the White House, multiple international jazz festivals, and for dignitaries like Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Sinicrope’s students have gone on to successful careers—including acclaimed jazz artists Aaron Goldberg and Steve Lehman—but his impact, however, extends far beyond any single school.

Bob has been a faculty member of Jamey Aebersold’s Jazz Workshops for more than 40 years, and is also on the faculty of the Victor Wooten Berklee Bass workshop. Sinicrope has also taught workshops in over 30 countries across six continents. A devoted humanitarian, for decades Bob has also used jazz as a bridge between cultures. In South Africa, he has led student performance tours across the country has been instrumental in Cape Town’s Township Jazz Festival. He’s responsible for delivering over $300,000 in donated music materials to underserved schools in South Africa and Cuba, and his efforts have brought jazz education to countless students who might never have had the opportunity otherwise.

“Jazz is enjoyed and played throughout the world and is a wonderful means to bring unity and share joy. It has a proven power to cross barriers, create communities and unite nations, form bonds between different races, cultures and religions and to affect the heart and the mind, from the richest man to the poorest child. Music is universal!"
— Bob Sinicrope

Sinicrope’s dedication has earned him some of the highest honors in music education. He was the first recipient of the John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year award from IAJE and Berklee College of Music, he has served as the longstanding President of the Jazz Education Network (JEN), and in 2024 was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame for Jazz Education.

As a bassist, Sinicrope has performed with legends across every generation—Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Grace Kelly, Abdullah Ibrahim, Victor Wooten, the Boston Pops, the Artie Shaw Band, and many more. He currently leads two international ensembles: The World Leaders and SoundsGlobal, both dedicated to showcasing the power of jazz as a global art form. Bob has managed to blend and balance the highest levels of musicianship with a rare dedication to music education and student-focused pedagogy in a way very few have.
