"The Practice Notebooks of Michael Brecker" is in the world!

After many months of hard work, we’re thrilled to announce the release of The Practice Notebooks of Michael Brecker!

Michael Brecker, one of the greatest saxophonists in the history of jazz, kept extensive handwritten notes throughout his career—detailing the insights, discoveries, and challenges that came up during his intense practice sessions. These notebooks were private, never intended for publication. But with the generous blessing of Michael’s widow, Susan Brecker, we were given the rare opportunity to bring them to life.

What you’ll find in this book are meticulously re-engraved versions of Michael’s original practice materials—now clean, legible, and easy to incorporate into your own routine. Whether you’re a saxophonist, a serious improviser, or a curious student of genius, this book offers a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the inner workings of a jazz titan’s mind.

"Michael’s talent was matched by his tireless work ethic, driven by the feeling that he never quite sounded as good as he wanted to. That drive is what made him extraordinary."
— Chuck Sher

One of our favorite stories comes from Bill Milkowski’s excellent biography, Ode to a Tenor Titan. When bassist Will Lee first arrived in Manhattan to play with Brecker, he had no idea how to find his way around the city. But all he had to do was follow the sound of Michael’s practicing through the city streets to find his way back to the apartment. That’s the kind of dedication we’re talking about.

Huge thanks to the team that made this possible:

  • Larry Dunlap – Music engraving and interpretation of ambiguous notation

  • David Demsey & Tim Armacost – Translated Michael’s cryptic fingerings for the new Saxophone-Specific Appendix

  • Art Khu – Expert proofreading

  • Attila Nagy – Graphic design wizardry

  • Matt Heister – Digital edition support

  • Bob Afifi – Technical everything

This project is a true labor of love, and we hope it brings inspiration, insight, and fuel to your own musical journey.
