"The Rhythm Changes Guide" Now Available
In my role as a public radio jazz host (KRCB-FM, first Saturday of each month, 7–11 PM Pacific time), I spend a lot of time scouring the internet for hip new jazz releases. A few years ago, I came across one of the best CDs I’ve ever heard of cutting-edge jazz from Europe — Evocation by a one-time ensemble called Generations Unit 2012. A fantastic record.
So when the saxophonist from that album, Lukas Gabric, reached out to say he’d written a book on rhythm changes and wanted Sher Music Co. to publish it, I was intrigued. Lukas is a saxophone instructor for Juilliard’s MAP program and an excellent player in his own right — a great foundation to build from.
After half a dozen back-and-forth edits between us, I’m thrilled to say that the final result is the most comprehensive book ever published on rhythm changes — the various ways to approach and master one of jazz’s most essential forms. Whether you're a student or a pro, this book is a serious tool for deepening your understanding and creativity.
And finally… I want to wish all of us on this beleaguered planet the best of luck as we continue rebuilding after the pandemic and these past few turbulent years. The world needs us — and who else is going to play “Confirmation”? Not the chipmunks.
