Vincent Herring Featured in DownBeat Magazine

We’re proud to announce that world-renowned alto saxophonist and jazz educator Vincent Herring, author of Logic and Critical Thinking in Jazz Improvisation, was recently featured in DownBeat Magazine alongside tenor sax titan Eric Alexander.

In the article, “Battle Royale,” Herring speaks candidly about the level of preparation and mindset required to succeed as a working jazz musician — offering this sobering reminder to young players:

“I tell them [students], ‘After you’re finished with school, you’re out there, competing with all the people you admire. You barely practice. You don’t know these core tunes, and you can’t do this or that. The way you play, you’re going to stake your life and well-being and quality of life on competing against Eric Alexander for gigs? Whatever you do in life, you want to do it with excellence. If you decide to be a player, you have to put in serious time.’”

That kind of real-world clarity is exactly what sets Vincent Herring apart — not only as a saxophonist, but as a devoted mentor to the next generation of jazz musicians.

His recent book, Logic and Critical Thinking in Jazz Improvisation, provides a framework for serious players who want to approach jazz with intention, focus, and a higher level of musicianship. The book explores how mental discipline and logical structure can unlock greater creativity, freedom, and consistency on the bandstand.
