Reading, Writing & Rhythmetic: The ABCs of Music Transcription

By Roberta Radley

Learn to See What You Hear & Hear What You Read

Whether you’re a “play by ear” musician, formally trained, or somewhere in between, Reading, Writing and Rhythmetic by Roberta Radley gives you a clear, structured path to mastering transcription.

Roberta Radley defines a practical, step-by-step system designed to bridge the gap between sound and notation allowing you to 'see what you hear, and hear what you see'. Her guiding formula is simple and powerful:

Listening (ear training) + Analysis (brain training) = Successful Transcription

This book teaches you how to connect what you hear with what it looks like on the page, and just as importantly, how to look at written music and be able to hear it internally.

Throughout the book, you’ll engage in carefully sequenced activities all designed to prepare you for the ultimate goal of capturing what you hear and creating accurate transcriptions:

• Focused listening exercises
• Sight-singing and rhythmic development
• Playing and composing tasks
• Analytical strategies for understanding structure
• Guided transcription of “real music” examples

At the heart of this method is the transcription of examples from actual songs. You’ll work with over 300 pieces spanning nearly every musical genre, developing practical skills that translate directly to real-world musicianship.

Includes 2 CD download with audio for each exercise, available here.

Teachers will find hundreds of pages of adaptable classroom material, making this book an invaluable supplement or complete framework for their ear training and transcription instruction.

Every music student and teacher must have Roberta Radley's new book. She takes a pragmatic approach to developing sight-singing, transcriptions, and rhythm in a variety of styles. This book is effective, fun, and a fine contribution to the literature.”
